Welcoming The Ramadan Series With Three Simple Things

I was thinking about the best way to keep posting during Ramadan without making it cumbersome. We want to focus on being productive with praying and deepening our connection with Allah (SWT). So I am going to do a series of weekly posts with three main things.

First: a crafting activity or two.

Second: a prayer or Dua to practice with the kids or yourself

Third: a book recommendation specifically for the kids with link to the read aloud if available.

I thought about adding something related to food and meal prep, but I am not organized enough to accomplish that (yet!).

I am going to focus on keeping everything simple.

Every week till Eid, inshallah I will follow this format as best as possible. I also tend to do random bits that I post on Instagram. You can check that out @urdukacove.

I have created a special Ramadan placemat for kids that you can download from the library. If you laminate it or place it under a plastic table cover, you can have kids write on it too. Make sure you signup to get access to it.

Week 1: Popsicle stick Star Activity

You will need:

• Five popsicle sticks or craft sticks for each star. Affiliate link here
• Liquid glue, UHU type of glue, (or hot glue gun if you are comfortable using it)
• Sequins, stickers, gems, washi tape, etc to decorate, or just let the kids use markers
• Optional: yarn or thread to hang it

It is easier to position the craft sticks before you glue them using Hot glue gun. The other types of liquid glue take time to dry so you can adjust the position after applying them as well.

Another way is to make a paper template with marking the corners of the complete star, so you can just align the sticks without worrying if they will fit.

To start, first make a point with two craft sticks.

Next, put another stick pointing to the left side.

Then another one across it.

Lastly, the fifth one should complete the star shape.

Once the glue is dry and the star is sturdy, you can start to add embellishments.

I made a quick video so you can see how quick and simple this is.

Now you can hang this as a decoration if you want.

*Optional: You can also ask the kids to write the names of the five pillars of Islam on the back of the star for older kids.

Week 1 Dua for Ramadan

I found so many wonderful Duas/Supplications for Ramadan. This one is about guidance from Allah and I think is very appropriate for the beginning of Ramadan.

Week 1 Book for kids

We set up our Ramadan corner this week with books we already enjoy reading. One is pretty famous called “It’s Ramadan Curious George”

It is a simple story about the basics of Ramadan. We plan to show it to the Kindergarten class at my daughter’s school this year, InshAllah.
